The partnership between Goodfellow Air Force Base and San Angelo continues to make headlines.

Most recently, General Steve Kwast, commander of the Air Education and Training Command, or AETC, announced San Angelo as the winner of the 2018 Altus Trophy

The trophy is given to the Air Education and Training Command community that provides the best support to its local military installation.

Only one community nationwide has won the award twice, and that community is San Angelo.

Mike Boyd is a retired San Angelo banker who is a member of the Goodfellow Military Advisory Group.  Boyd accepted the trophy on behalf of the city.

Working with the Defense Information Systems Agency and Air Combat Command, the military advisory group secured $20 million to fund the installation of 40-gigabit fiber optic cable. This enabled the use of enhanced capabilities in virtual-reality and artificial intelligence.

With 29 memorandums of understanding in place between the city and the base, San Angelo is one of the Air Force leaders in developing public-to-public, public-to-private partnerships.

The city and Goodfellow pool resources, reducing costs.

One example is ambulatory services. The city provides ambulance support to the base. The base provides vehicle maintenance.

Your Chamber is a direct participant in this Goodfellow-San Angelo effort. We’ll keep working to keep the base a welcome component of our outstanding community.
