Members of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce:

This week our developments have been mixed. Positive news includes the fact that the markets are up, with the NASDAQ is in record territory. West Texas Intermediate Crude prices have topped $40 dollars per barrel. A record-breaking 4.8 million jobs were added nationwide in June. The economic recovery is well underway. On the flip side, both nationally and locally, we are seeing an upsurge in COVID-19 diagnosed cases and hospitalizations. Restrictions on many of our local businesses have been reinstated. Many in our business community are suffering.

We have seen debate on the efficacy and advisability of many of the recommended COVID-19 countermeasures, including the wearing of masks. For our business community and community at large, we need to work together to achieve normalcy as soon as possible. Bending the curve and arresting the increase of the COVID-19 incident rate is essential. Personally, I have decided to wear my mask – not as a symbol or a statement but as a way to do my part to help our businesses.

This week we saw the passing of a pillar in our community, Charles E. Powell, Col. USAF (RET). I never had the honor of meeting Colonel Powell, but I was honored to get to know him through the love and respect shown to him by others. As a community we are grateful for the long and lasting contributions made by both Colonel Powell and his lovely wife Joanne.

We are kicking off a new program this week. Our African American Business Coalition will be featuring a coalition member’s business in a television segment on a regular basis. The first installment of this television program will be shown on Saturday morning at 8 am on FOX West Texas. It’s an outstanding chance to get to know our business community. Don’t miss it… set your DVR now!

My wife MG and I are looking forward to our first Chamber luncheon later this month. Please rest assured, we have a very strong plan to ensure the safety of all attendees. Our agenda includes the celebration of our Leadership San Angelo class graduation and a State of the County presentation from our County Judge Steve Floyd. We are currently sold out and unfortunately our request for a waiver allowing a larger attendance has been rejected. We will continue the dialogue and are hopeful that we will be able accommodate larger audiences in the coming weeks and months. We will keep you all informed of further developments.

Planning for our West Texas Moving Forward Conference is well underway. This inaugural event  will provide a unique opportunity for our attendees to learn more about the industries that will drive our future economy and the trends that will shape our community in the post-COVID-19 environment. The event will be held in person on August 11 with optional virtual participation. Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are now available. Given the current policies, the number of in-person attendees will be limited and tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you want to attend in-person, we encourage you to get your tickets here.
