Members of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce:

It has been a good week in San Angelo. Indications that our efforts to quell the spread of the COVID 19 virus are beginning to have an impact. Many numbers are being reported including positive tests, negative tests, infection rates, hospitalizations, and deaths, among others. We are seeing some stabilization in terms of the infection rate. Our great hospital system has plenty of capacity and is handing the crisis well. As I am out in the community, I see more folks wearing masks and practicing social distancing. Let’s all keep up the good work. We are certainly starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

That light is particularly bright for San Angelo. Over the past several weeks we have been talking about how well San Angelo is positioned for success in the post-COVID-19 environment. Major macroeconomic trends including the migration of companies from urban to rural, the movement from North to South, and the onshoring of manufacturing capacity from China will all benefit San Angelo. Others outside our region are already taking notice. This week, San Angelo was named in the Top 20 Best Cities to Live in After the Coronavirus Pandemic by Business Insider. The Chamber, in conjunction with all our local partners, will be working hard to make sure that our recovery will take the fullest and best advantage of these emergent trends.

The best way to learn how to take maximum advantage of our changing economic environment is by attending the Chamber’s West Texas Moving Forward Conference. This inaugural event will provide a unique opportunity for our attendees to learn more about the industries driving our future economy and the trends shaping our community in a post-COVID-19 environment. The August 11th conference will be held in-person with optional virtual participation. We have a great and growing array of sponsors and we appreciate the support. Given the current policies, the number of in-person attendees will be limited and tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you plan to attend virtually or in person, or if you are interested in being a sponsor, we encourage you to go online at www.sanangelo.org today.

My wife, MG, and I had a great opportunity to learn about and to celebrate an important chapter in San Angelo’s history. Yesterday evening we attended the ceremony commemorating the establishment of the Buffalo Soldier Day at Fort Concho. The contribution of the Buffalo Soldiers to the establishment of our community and many of the parks and infrastructure of our region was significant and is lasting. We encourage folks to learn more about these contributions by going to Fort Concho. We are so proud to be part of a community that has such an inspirational history!

Finally, we ask that you take a moment to like and follow us on Facebook and other social media platforms if you have not already done so.
